There have not been any vinicultures within the Mediterranean region of Turkey in the histor y of Turkish Republic. But when the ancient times were examined, a city which was the name fatherhood for wine and also received its name from it along with geography were in question.
Wine is made in a vineyard more so than in a winery. And what provides quality in a vineyard is climate conditions as much as its maintenance. You can be as successful as what geography presents you.
Therefore, what is real was climate conditions and knowing that the climate conditions haven’t changed all that much for the past thousands of years, rewinding back the history and re-awaken the wine city could have been difficult but not impossible.
To trace history under the light of today’s science has been both our vision and our mission.
Likya Wines project was decided to start in 1998 and after a year of inspections, it started in 1999 by ordering seeds.
Wine grape types and climate conditions in quality regions around the world were examined for a period of one year. In addition to this, 20 years of retroactive climate data, soil and water analysis of Elmalı town were very carefully scrutinized and it was seen that, in theory, it had very favorable conditions for viniculture.
Later on, we reached out to Prof. Dr. Hasan Çelik, who is the director of Horticulture Department at Ankara University Faculty of Agriculture, in order to re-evaluate this decision, to chose type of seeds that were inoculated on stems and are climate appropriate, to get accurately established vineyards and to grow them with the most proper care, and the work started under his guidance. For many years, necessary equipments have been examined for a modern winery and international trade fairs have been followed.
In addition, Burak Özkan have traveled to quality wine producing regions of the world and have examined the worldrenowned wineries and vineyards for 10 years. Because he studied Economics and International Business in London and the U.S.A., he didn’t have the academic infrastructure for wine, so he stopped his business life for a while and attended the Plumpton College in England for education in wine.
His brother Doruk Özkan graduated from Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture - Horticulture Department and started to take care of the vineyards.
Likya Wines is a family company and thus the two brothers have shared work on subjects that they are experts on. 4,000 years ago, Hittites named a city Wiyanawanda where they made wine. Wiyana meant wine and Wanda meant city.
Later on, the Lycians who lived in that city, named the city Oenoanda which again meant wine city. Oeno meant wine and Anda meant city. The Oeno word still gets used universally as an identification with wine. And Wiyana in the Hittitie language is the name fatherhood to the Indo-European language origins such as Wine, Vin, Vinum which are words that mean wine. It has been scientifically proven that these words have derived from Wiyana.
Oenoanda territory surrounds a large region within its borders. Because our vineyards are within these borders, Lycia vineyards and wine have been named wine re-born to our days project. Therefore, our slogan has been ‘’Ancient Wine City is born after 4,000 years’’.
Beeline distance of our vineyards and wineries to the center of the ancient city is just 16 miles. Again located very close to our vineyards, excavations done in Lycia’s ancient city Arykanda have revealed a winery and this has shown how important winemaking was in the region.
