Matarromera Prestigio - 2011

2011: Moderate winter with a short period of frosts and little rainfall. Mild spring, moderately rainy and hot towards the end. Mild and dry start to summer, very hot at the end with acute drought. Superb harvesting conditions at the beginning of October, with good ripening owing to the high temperatures and healthy conditions thanks to the absence of rainfall.

The Wine:
Matarromera Prestigio 2011 is the product of grapes from old vineyards on the Pago de las Solanas estate. It is only made in those years when the grapes and the vintage achieve the quality demanded by Bodega Matarromera. In 2011 only 14,500 kilos of grapes harvested in boxes and selected at a sorting table were made into wine. The distinguishing feature of Matarromera Prestigio 2011 is its twofold aging process. For nine months it is aged in French barrels from Allier, after which it is racked to continue its aging for another nine months in new American oak barrels. Aging in bottles is extended to 24 months in dark, heavy, truncated bottles with a natural stopper.

Grapes rigorously selected from old vineyards. The wine spends 18 months in barrels in the two most iconic oaks: nine months in American wood and another nine in French wood, with different degrees of charring. Matarromera Prestigio has an excellent balance with spicy aromas coming from the time spent in barrels. It maintains an intense cherryred colour, crisp and bright. Its bouquet is potent, rich in toasted subtleties with a background of very ripe black fruit. It has a powerful structure of sweet tannins with a long finish. All this adds up to a wine that is both truly stylish and modern in its profile.
