Kaiken Ultra Malbec 2013

Tasting note:
Our Malbec Ultra 2013, with its fresh, elegant notes, is the outstanding outcome of a season characterized by rather low summer temperatures. It’s brilliant, deep ruby-red, with a wonderful display of rich aromas. The nose is enticing and spicy; a clear expression of a cool year. Black fruit aromas reminiscent of blueberries and blackberries show this wine’s great typicity. Good structure and soft tannins lead to a finish that is fresh, complex, and long, with fruit notes and subtle undertones of rosemary, thyme, and dry flowers.

Food pairing and serving tips:
Our Malbec Ultra is an elegant, expressive wine with refined tannins. We recommend 30-minute decanting to bring out the full range of delicious flavors and aromas. Serve at 59°-63°F (15°-17°C) with casseroles or not too elaborate red meat dishes, or just enjoy with ripe cheese. Store in a cool (<15°C) and dry place, protected from direct exposure to light.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Vinyards:
The fruit for our Malbec Ultra 2013 was sourced in the Uco Valley. Variations in altitude and soil type result in grapes with distinct characteristics, that give individual and highly complex wines. Grapes are sourced from three vineyards with individual characteristics and superior quality terroirs. These vineyards are grown at different altitudes: Vistaflores at 1,400 m.a.s.l.; Gualtallary at 1,300 m.a.s.l.; and Altamira at 1,100 m.a.s.l. Soil types are similar: alluvial with sand, silt, and clay on top of very rocky layers that provide excellent drainage and ideal conditions for growing highly concentrated grapes.

Harvest report:
2013 was marked by lower than usual temperatures. Weather conditions were marked by a dry spring—very common in Mendoza—and rather low temperatures. These factors favored good flowering and fruit set. High early summer temperatures and hot nights called for careful irrigation management to avoid plant dehydration. From half-way to the end of summer, weather conditions changed and extremely low temperatures were again recorded. Cooler nights gave us fruit with perfect maturity at harvest. Scarce rainfall and low humidity resulted in healthy plants, allowing us to wait for the ideal moment to pick in April. winemaking: To protect it, fruit for our Malbec Ultra was hand-picked into 10kg-trays, then manually selected in the winery to avoid any unwanted elements that might affect the wine, before crushing. Must was fermented in small tanks under optimum conditions, preserving vineyard character and qualities. After one month’s fermentation (including maceration), all the wine was decanted into French oak barrels (1/3 into old barrels, and 2/3 into second- and third-use barrels). Wine was aged in barrels for 12 months and was lightly filtered through cartridges before bottling.
